Hansen took courses that focused on pediatric fractures, dislocations, musculoskeletal infections, and foot conditions. In addition, he attended a meeting of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) that was held in conjunction with the AAOS conference.

“This was a great opportunity to stay up to date about the latest research and techniques,” Hansen said. At the AOFAS seminar, he attended courses that addressed the correction of acquired flat foot and bunions; the benefits and drawbacks in using fusion, replacement and correctional osteotomies in the treatment of ankle arthritis; and the latest treatment of Charcot arthropathy, a severe degeneration of the bones in the foot that is most common in diabetics.

Kung attended forums on shoulder arthroplasty, shoulder arthroscopy, and sports-related injuries including ligamentous knee injuries. The talks were conducted by international leaders in the field who discussed new techniques and their experiences in dealing with various types of procedures.

“Many of the techniques and issues discussed are directly applicable to conditions I see among patients in Longview,” Kung said.

Hansen and Kung also researched electronic medical records options that will help Longview Orthopedic Associates deal efficiently with new Medicare requirements.
